On his 21st birthday, Tim Lake (Domhnall Gleeson) discovers from his father (Bill Nighy) that the men in his family have an extraordinary secret - they can travel through time. They can't go into other people's past or the distant future, only back to moments in their own lives. At first, Tim uses this gift to correct embarrassing situations and make his life a little more pleasant.
When he meets Mary (Rachel McAdams), he uses his ability to perfect their encounter and build a relationship with her. Their love blossoms into a happy marriage, but Tim soon realises that time travel can't solve all problems. He is faced with difficult decisions, such as when he discovers that certain events, illnesses or family losses cannot be changed without serious consequences.
Over time, Tim learns that the real secret to a fulfilling life is not in endlessly righting wrongs, but in living and appreciating each moment as it is, with love, family and the transience of life as central pillars.
