Asteroid City transports us to a fictional town in the American desert in 1955, where a convention for young space cadets is being held. What begins as a familiar scientific event takes a surreal turn after an encounter with extraterrestrial life.
With his unmistakable visual style, Wes Anderson constructs a melancholic comedy full of symmetry, colour and peculiar characters. Jason Schwartzman plays a widowed photographer who arrives with his children, where he meets Midge, an enigmatic actress played by Scarlett Johansson. Tom Hanks, Tilda Swinton and many more also appear in a brilliant ensemble cast.
The film alternates between theatrical black and white scenes and colourful moments within the main story, playing with form and content. Through dialogue charged with irony and restrained emotion, it explores themes of loss, routine and the desire to understand the universe - and oneself.
A different kind of film, which invites you to let yourself be carried away by the beauty of the strange and the carefully constructed.
