The film follows a group of British pensioners who decide to radically change their lives by moving to India to live in what they believe to be a luxurious and modern retirement hotel. Upon arriving at the The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, they discover that the place is run-down and far from the advertised promises, but enthusiastically managed by young Sonny, who is trying to keep it afloat against all odds.
As the guests settle into their new lives, each one begins to face their own personal issues, from loneliness to financial or emotional difficulties. Little by little, the hotel and its inhabitants form an unexpected community, where they learn to rediscover love, friendship and the meaning of life in their later years.
The story combines humour, drama, and warmth, showing how a radical change of environment can open the door to new opportunities and second lives.
