The Proposal is a funny and charming romantic comedy revolving around Margaret Tate (played by Sandra Bullock), a strict and feared Canadian-born book editor working in New York. When she faces imminent deportation to Canada due to a visa problem, she devises a desperate plan to keep her job: force her assistant, Andrew Paxton (Ryan Reynolds), to marry her.
Andrew reluctantly agrees, but makes it a condition that they travel to his hometown in Alaska to meet his peculiar family.
